Campus Spotlight: University of Tampa

Overview

Are you looking for a college where you can enjoy year-round warm sunny weather while studying marine biology? The University of Tampa may be worthy of your attention. The University of Tampa is a mid-sized, private University located in downtown Tampa, FL. The campus is small enough that students can easily walk from one end to the other in less than 15 minutes but still has plenty of green spaces to study, gather, and play between classes. Though students need only step off campus to immerse themselves in the downtown Tampa experience, the UT campus feels relatively private, with no through streets breaking up the campus. The University of Tampa offers over 200 academic programs and though they are probably best known for the majors in the Sykes School of Business, UT is also a great place to study the ocean and environment.

The Vibe

When I arrived at the University of Tampa (UT) campus, it was the week before spring finals. The first thing that struck me was how incredibly calm the campus seemed. While I am sure that there were students holed up in dorm rooms and quieter sections of the library, frantically studying for exams and putting the finishing touches on final assignments, none of this anxious fervor was apparent on the greater campus. Students seemed relaxed, confident, and eager to connect with each other and the curious college consultant who peppered them with questions about their experience at UT. I’m sure the year-round sunshine and warm temperatures help but there is something more to this welcoming campus community.

Another thing that stood out as I explored the campus was how few students were sitting alone. Almost everyone seemed to have a friend or two with whom they were happily chatting or exchanging pleasantries. At one point, as our tour group passed through the John H. Sykes College of Business, home to many of UT’s most popular business and economics majors, I noticed a number of students sitting alone on benches in the hallway that stretched between classrooms. Ah, I thought, so here’s where the lonely students are. However, in the minutes that followed, every single student was surrounded by a small group of friends and classmates who seemed genuinely excited to see each other. With recent studies supporting the importance of a sense of belonging in college student retention and academic performance, it is encouraging to see so many students engaging with each other on campus. In fact, University of Tampa’s first year retention rate is 80%. Graduation rate is 60%, just over the midpoint for 4-year schools in the U.S. (58%).

The friendly and welcoming atmosphere at UT is ideal for social students who enjoy being a part of a community while actively pursuing their own academic and extracurricular interests. In fact, the University of Tampa’s active and engaged student body is not just a matter of chance. Approximately half of the students come from out of state, including about 1,200 international students. In 2022, the student body of approximately 10,500 students represented all 50 states and 130 countries. With so many students coming from far away, fewer students head home for the weekend so the student body is focused on creating community and getting involved on campus and in the local Tampa area.

Though Spartans are a social bunch, the campus does not have a “party school” vibe and Greek Life, though active and available for those who desire it, does not dominate the social scene. While some of the students I interacted with were involved in Greek life, many were not and all felt that they were able to find their home in the UT social scene

Opportunities for Students Interested in Marine & Environmental Fields

Academic Majors & Programs

University of Tampa offers the following undergraduate majors for students interested in marine and environmental fields:

  • Environmental Studies (B.S., B.A.), with concentrations available in Communication, Humanity & Geography, Natural Sciences, and Public Policy
  • Marine Chemistry (B.S.)
  • Marine Science-Biology (B.S.)

Environmental Studies, Marine Science-Biology, and Sustainability are also available as minors that could be paired alongside different majors, such as Entrepreneurship, Journalism, or Law, Justice and Advocacy.  Combing these fields might be of particular interest for students who want to explore careers in sustainable business, environmental journalism, or environmental law, respectively.

Field Stations & Facilities

The University of Tampa maintains a Marine Science Field Station on Tampa Bay, about a 15-20 minute drive from campus. In addition to wet and dry lab facilities, this field station also houses UT’s new offshore, scuba-ready research vessel, the R/V BIOS II. In addition, the fleet includes 2 Grady Whites (27- & 23-footer), a 17-foot outboard boat, kayaks, and canoes.  Unfortunately, the Marine Science Field Station was closed for visitors when I was on campus, so I am unable to offer a solid comparison to other similar field stations,  but undergraduates report a positive experience engaging in coursework and research at this site. Prospective students can also explore the facility virtually through this video and 360 degree photo.

Research Opportunities & Experiential Learning

In addition to the Marine Science Field Station, students have the opportunity to engage in field research courses at the Gulf Coast Research Laboratory, associated with the University of Southern Mississippi, in Ocean Springs, MS, through a formal partnership between these institutions that allows students to take courses at GCRL in the summer and apply the credits earned as transfer credits at UT.  Students can also engage in research, internships, and job opportunities at the multitude of research institutions, zoos and aquariums, and environmental agencies and nonprofits in the greater Tampa area.

The University of Tampa offers a number of programs to help students fund undergraduate research including the Undergraduate Research and Inquiry Grant and the Summer Undergraduate Research Fellowship (SURF). One thing that stands out about UT’s funding for undergraduate research is that students can get started with funded research opportunities right away. The Spartan Undergraduate Research Experience (SURE) program provides access to funding for hands-on research to first year students.
